Artist Statement

Li Yadong is a conceptual artist and sound artist active in China. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, China in 2021, and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Chelsea College, University of the Arts London in 2023.

He advocates rational work and simple aesthetics. By bridging the gap between digital media and traditional artistic expression, his practice involves a critical analysis of modern life. Behind his sound artworks are a series of rigorous conceptual frameworks and theoretical research. His artistic expression is not only satisfied with the surface play of sound, but goes deep into the core of data, trying to decode the complexity of human perception in the context of the digital age. His exploration of music and non-music began when he stepped into this field of generating music from data. As he puts it, this process is a "cultivation", an artistic journey in which he is constantly searching for and transcending between the tangible and the intangible, the order and the chaos.

In the future, he has decided to shift his creative focus from data-generated music to the critical study of landscape society. This shift reflects his evolving artistic practice and deep insight into social phenomena. He will deeply explore the potential of sound as a tool for social criticism. He expects his works to trigger discussions on the current state of society and inspire people to find their own voices in the hustle and bustle of the everyday.

In the light of landscape social theory, he will look at those elements of everyday life that constantly bombard the sense of hearing - advertising campaigns, media reports, consumer culture and the hustle and bustle of the city. These elements will no longer be random noises in his new creations, but will be transformed into conscious artistic expressions that reflect the impact of modern society on individual perception and collective memory. By reconstructing these sound fragments, Li Yadong's work will challenge the viewer's default acceptance of those forces that shape the perception of reality. His creations aim to evoke a critical consciousness in the viewer, prompting a reassessment of the flow of information that is passively received and how it constructs our worldview and values. His art will serve as a mirror reflecting the complex and often distorted relationship between the individual and the social environment.
